Who I Am
My name is Zev Steinhardt and I am a photographer. I’ve lived in Brooklyn, New York ever since I was a little kid. I’m happily married to the love of my life and have three adult children.
What Do You Photograph?
There are a number of genres that I photograph, but my first (photographic) love is landscape photography. I love photographing the beauty of nature.
You might think that it is difficult to shoot nature photography while being based in New York City — the very epitome of the jungle of concrete, steel and glass. It does present some challenges, but there are plenty of spaces in the city where nature can be photographed. In particular, I love to create images that, when viewed, evoke a response of “That’s in New York City??!” To see my nature shots of New York City, please click here.
Of course, I also love to shoot nature outside of New York City. In the last few years, I’ve made trips to several of the National Parks in the US, including Acadia, Great Smoky Mountain, Shenandoah and Rocky Mountain National Park.
What Else Do You Like To Photograph?
I’m pretty much a lifelong New Yorker and love the city that I live in. While I do prefer to shoot the beauty of nature, there is plenty of beauty in the city’s magnificent man-made structures as well. New York City has a unique look and I love to capture that look in my photographs. The city’s bridges, buildings, and iconic landmarks, as well as its famous skylines are all favorite subjects of mine as well.
Another love of mine is macro photography. I love being able to capture the minute, intricate details of everyday objects that we miss in the hustle and bustle of our every day lives. These pictures force me to slow down and learn to appreciate the details.
Waterfalls are also a favorite subject of mine, and I will travel pretty far to photograph waterfalls. You can see my waterfall photos here.
When Did You First Become Interested In Photography?
Believe it or not, I didn’t become interested in photography until I was in my 30s.
Until 2001, I used to tell people (truthfully!) that I couldn’t take a decent picture to save my life. Aside from a brief flirtation as a child, I didn’t really have any interest in photography and knew nothing about it. In fact, I was so ignorant about photography that I remember looking through a mail order catalog and, upon seeing that you could buy a camera without a lens, remarked to myself “Who on earth would buy a camera without a lens?”
My real interest in photography began with a trip that my wife and I took to Israel in 2001. I bought a simple point-and-shoot camera to take along with me and document the trip. It was on that trip that I found that I enjoyed taking images. I experimented with that camera for a few years before finally purchasing my first DSLR camera in 2008, when I was nearly 40.
Since then, photography has been my passion. I’ve invested time and money in equipment, training and a lot of practice and, I like to think, I’ve gotten better at it over the years. 🙂
How Is This Site Different From Your Other Website?
My two websites serve two very different purposes.
This website’s main purpose is to teach photography and post-processing. I enjoy teaching and passing on what I learned to other photographers. I believe strongly in giving back to the community of photographers and in helping new photographers learn and acquire the skills and techniques that will make them better photographers.
My other website (ZevSteinhardt.com) serves as a place for me to show my personal photography and interact with people who are interested in my art. It’s more of a showcase site and not intended as an educational site as this is. You are, of course, free to check out that site as well and I’d be thrilled if you followed me in both locations.
